Thanjavur Brihadeeshwarar Temple and the mysteries associated with it

Hi! Welcome back. Sukriti AD here.

This post is about the famous Thanjavur Brihadeeshwarar Temple, located in Tamil Nadu, India.

Have you ever heard about this temple? No?
Ok, let me tell you then.

Brihadeeshwarar Temple is also known as Rajarajeswaram or Peruvudaiyaar Kovil. It is located in the south bank of Kaveri river in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the largest temples of South India, and is a perfect example of Dravidan architecture.

It was built in the year 1010 C. E. by Raja Raja Cholan. It turned 1000 years old in September, 2010.

But, do you know that there are a few mysteries associated with this temple?
Although many researchers tried to solve these mysteries, all their attempts went in vain.

Hmm.. interesting, isn't it?

Ok, let's look at a few of those mysteries, one by one.

• The cap stone

The top most part of the raja gopuram of this temple is a single stone, weighing 80 tons! The technique or method that was used by the Cholas is still unknown, because it was built in an era when equipments like cranes, escalators, etc. weren't invented.

Wow. Surprising, right? Same here. Let's move on to the next mystery.

• No shadow

Another wonder of this raja gopuram is, the shadow of the gopuram does not fall on the ground. The geometrical construction is absolutely perfect and it was created 1000's of years ago.

Amazing, isn't it?!

Can't wait to see the next one?! Here you go.

• Underground passages

There are more than 100 passages leading to different places. This temple is considered as an extraordinary symbol of a capital of the Chola dynasty. These passages lead to the king's palace, the other temples, and many other regions.

What's so mysterious about these tunnels?

Some paths lead to dangerous spots and since nobody knows the map of these tunnels, all of them are sealed.

Hehe, already curious about the next one?

• Mysterious Nandhi

The Nandhi statue kept growing in size. It was kept aside and nailed to the grounds. Nobody was able to find the logic behind it.

Ok! That's all. Hope you liked this post! Make sure to follow my blog!
